Becherovka, the 13th spring of Karlovy Vary

Bottles of Becherovka

Becherovka, a herbal liqueur which through its quality and taste transcends its category. The father of Becherovka was Josef Vitus Becher (1769–1840). Apart from trading in spices and colonial goods in his shop «At the Three Skylarks», he also devoted himself to the production of alcohol – already in 1794, he rented a stillhouse somewhere in the town and started to experiment with hard alcohol. Following the example of his forefathers, he also served in public office (as councillor, mayor and portreeve). Josef was married twice (his first wife died of pneumonia) and had a total of 16 children, although only five daughters and two sons outlived him. Josef’s business was taken over in 1838 by his son Johann Nepomuk Becher, called “Jan” in Czech. His signature can be found to this day on every bottle of Becherovka, confirming its original quality and taste.

Jägermeister (German pronunciation [jɛːɡɐˌmaɪstɐ]) is a popular German strong liqueur, an infusion of herbs. Alcohol by volume: 35%. The drink belongs to the category of bitters. It is produced since 1935 by Mast-Jagermeister AG, headquartered in Wolfenbüttel (Lower Saxony). The liqueur was originally invented as a medicine for digestion stimulation. Since 1970s it is exported to dozens of countries worldwide.

The first written notice about whisky is dated to the year 1405 and comes from Ireland, where whisky was produced by monks. There is also an evidence of whisky production in Scotland: it is found in the registry of Scotland's Treasury and dated to the 1st of July 1494. It is about giving “eight bolls of malt to Friar John Cor wherewith to make aqua vitae”.
